But what else > would you expect for $500 ? The two-fingered scroll control is a seriously slick solution. I've been using an implementation of this for a while now (though this is not, unfortunately, available on OpenVMS), and it easily blows away any other similar scheme I've encountered -- horizontal scroll across the Firefox tabs... Accelerometers are also latent within the system, though I've not (knowingly) tried those out. -- www.HoffmanLabs.com Services for OpenVMS ------------------------------ Date: 14 Jan 2007 13:03:43 -0800 From: "siju" Subject: Re: OpenVMS Licence for people in Asia Message-ID: <1168808623.669629.55620@l53g2000cwa.googlegroups.com> On Jan 14, 9:40 pm, "siju" wrote: > On Jan 13, 9:15 am, "johnhreinha...@yahoo.com" > > > I believe that for a license for SimH you put "SIMH" for the CPU > > serial #Thankyou so much John :-) > > it worked Now :-) > I Got the Licences in my mail. Couldyou please tell me where i can Download OpenVMS and the other software? the links on the hobbyist website http://www.openvmshobbyist.com/opensource.html http://www.openvmshobbyist.com/downloads.html Shows Only Limitted Software and Games. Also is it possible to get the GUI on SIMH? What is the Maximum amount RAM I can Configure SIMH to run with? Also Maximum Hard Disk Size? There is no sanctioned FTP site available for this, AFAIK. AFAIK, HP has not opened up its (password-protected) FTP distro site to hobbyists, nor does HP typically make a disk image file available, nor AFAIK has HP authorized others to FTP-serve the kits. The usual course is to borrow the official distro disks from another site, or (usually better) to acquire the hobbyist distro for US$30 -- and that price includes international shipping -- and you can then directly use the bootable distro and core layered products from that CD. > the links on the hobbyist website > > http://www.openvmshobbyist.com/opensource.html > http://www.openvmshobbyist.com/downloads.html > > Shows Only Limitted Software and Games. OpenVMS is not a gaming platform -- there are few available, and they are rather limited. And old. For links to various resources, see the OpenVMS FAQ at . > Also is it possible to get the GUI on SIMH? Apparently not. does not list a graphics controller. SRI has a hobbyist offering and at least the commercial version of the SRI CHARON-VAX emulator has an emulation of a graphics controller and DECwindows capabilities. Information on the SRI emulator is available at: Based on a very quick read of the SRI Freeware page, that version does not include the graphics controller. > What is the Maximum amount RAM I can Configure SIMH to run with? lists 64 MB in its emulation. VAX systems are rather limited in their physical and virtual addressing. > Also Maximum Hard Disk Size? 1 TB is the theoretical upper limit for OpenVMS disk capacity. Older OpenVMS VAX and certain systems can have other and lower limits, see the OpenVMS FAQ for details on that, for ECO listings, and for console ROM limits. -- www.HoffmanLabs.com Services for OpenVMS ------------------------------ Date: 14 Jan 2007 15:48:04 -0800 From: davidc@montagar.com Subject: Re: OpenVMS Licence for people in Asia Message-ID: <1168818483.672025.210390@51g2000cwl.googlegroups.com> Stephen Hoffman wrote: > > Also is it possible to get the GUI on SIMH? > > Apparently not. Actually, you can - sort of. Enable DECWindows, run SYS$STARTUP:TCPIP$CONFIG and make sure XDM is turned on. Then use an X-window client to access it and get a login screen for it (like CygWin, Excursion, etc). It will probably be more effecient than emulated graphics hardware. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Jan 2007 21:32:47 -0600 From: Michael Austin Subject: Re: Oracle - Point to tnsnames file on another non cluster node Message-ID: Hal Kuff wrote: > Hi, > > Anyone play with either an entry in tnsnames.ora to point to another vms > node, or a logical? Looked at the TNS_ADMIN logical which would work, but > re-points the whole dir.. > > --- > > Hal, One thing to consider. Oracle does a TNS lookup for every request - therefore, if your "other" system is unavailable, your server is hosed. I would always keep a local copy of the "other" tnsnames.ora file and pointing TNS_ADMIN to that directory. You could always add a job that keeps the last-checked date in a seperate file and then compare it to the last-updated date on the remote node and if they do not match - copy the latest version to the local system. The risk is that if you fat-finger the remote node's tnsnames.ora and it gets copied to the new system - guess what happens... Hint: you won't like it... -- Michael Austin Database Consultant Domain Registration and Linux/Windows Web Hosting Reseller http://www.spacelots.com ------------------------------ Date: 14 Jan 2007 14:15:42 -0800 From: "bclaremont" Subject: Re: PDP11 Tape Copy to VAX: DOS11_BLOCKSIZE Message-ID: <1168812942.034904.77930@a75g2000cwd.googlegroups.com> Interesting note. The file count produced by the EXCHANGE DIR command and the file marks found by VMSTPC match on the first tape at 737. On the second tape VMSTPC only sees 1819 files, while EXCHANGE DIR sees 2859. I tried a TC /ANSI copy, but got the same results, 1819 file marks. Any thoughts on tools that can read the container files created by VMSTPC? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Jan 2007 12:36:11 -0800 From: Ken Fairfield Subject: Re: Suggestion: SET FILE/SHADOW= Message-ID: <50villF1hkdr5U1@mid.individual.net> David J Dachtera wrote: [...] > Here's one of my favorites for inclusion in a common system startup procedure > that still supports node-dependency: > > $ SRC_FSP := filespec > $ FSP = F$SEARCH( SRC_FSP ) > $ IF FSP .NES. I know there are times/reasons that dictate using the ampersand but I don't believe this is one of them. A style thing?
