Possibly one controller is stealing bus grants intended for the other and starving it. It sounds like you have at least an RQDX* (RD54s), a KDA50 (RA92) and an RLV22(?) for the RL02. Make sure they are in the right order on the bus (the uVAX 3900 Owner's or Maintenance Manual should have configuration rules), and the controllers have the right addresses and interrupt vectors (MCR SYSGEN CONFIGURE and/or the console configuration utility should help here. DGAS Qbus and serpentine :-) One a Unibus, if some device had a broken grant or NPR continuity circuit, I think you could get similar problems, but I don't think the same applies to Qbus. Do you know the publication/version of your white doc set? (V6.*) I have most of the programer's set (device driver and other intriguing system programming manuals). May 1993 is the date on one that I just pulled from the shelf. -- VAXman- A Bored Certified VMS Kernel Mode Hacker VAXman(at)TMESIS(dot)COM "Well my son, life is like a beanstalk, isn't it?" http://tmesis.com/drat.html ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Nov 2007 05:50:32 GMT From: John Santos Subject: Re: Minor Planet Center (was: Informationweek mentions VMS 30 year ) Message-ID: In article , Kilgallen@SpamCop.net says... > In article , david20@alpha2.mdx.ac.uk writes: > > > In general I think it is a reasonable article - I wasn't aware that the > > Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory Minor planet center was using a > > VAX/VMS cluster. > > The last I knew, that set of machines has only a few VAXen left > and the bulk of machines in the cluster are all Alpha. I'd like to be able to claim credit for all this :-) In about 1974, when I was an undergrad, I was sitting at one of the Wang distributed calculators in the hallway of the observatory, with a very thick listing while trying to debug a program, when Dr. Marsden walked by. He asked me what I was doing, and we ended up having an hour-long conversation about how computers could be used for so much more than just calculating orbits. Things such as keeping databases of all the asteroids and comets, making it easy to search, match up new observations with existing objects, do statistical studies of orbits, spectra, chemical properties, etc. Also, how the Arpanet could be used to communicate observations and announcements. (They used to send literal telegrams to observatories around the world every time they made an announcement, several times each week. The backup system was snail- mail postcards.) And lots of other stuff. I've always wondered if this was all new to him, or if he was just in Socratic teaching mode and trying to get me to think about the issues. :-) -- John ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Nov 2007 21:47:47 GMT From: Malcolm Dunnett Subject: Re: Mylex 960 question Message-ID: <7MKZi.25282$h57.12178@edtnps89> H Vlems wrote: > Of course it turned out to be a little more complicated because the > ARC software wouldn't load the > RA200RCU.EXE utility. I hope this is not considered OT here, as iīm not really sure if itīs an issue with VMS itself or my SimH Emulator. Anyway, System is VMS 7.3 with TCPIP V5.1 (SimH V3.7-3 on FreeBSD 5.5). For example, the config file I use contains: set xq type=3Ddelqa set xq mac=3D08-00-2B-AB-C1-35 The MAC address of course must be unique on your LAN, other than that you can do whatever you please. Iīll play around with those parameters tomorrow, when i have some time for my machine again...But now letīs get back to the Gabba :) regards -Sascha ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Nov 2007 02:12:35 +0100 From: ss Subject: Re: Need help with TCPIP V5.1 configuration Message-ID: In article <1194812839.382396.24280@19g2000hsx.googlegroups.com>, H Vlems wrote: > On 11 nov, 21:06, ss wrote: > > Hello... > > > > I hope this is not considered OT here, as iīm not really sure if itīs an > > issue with VMS itself or my SimH Emulator. > > > > Anyway, System is VMS 7.3 with TCPIP V5.1 (SimH V3.7-3 on FreeBSD 5.5). > > > > One week ago i finally had time for setting up my Hobbyist-System, and > > iīve had no problems, installation went fine so far. > > > > Until i tried to configure the Network: > > > > $ @SYS$STARTUP:TCPIP$STARTUP > > > > %TCPIP-I-INFO, TCP/IP Services startup beginning at 11-NOV-2007 > > 18:19:48.26 > > %TCPIP-I-NORMAL, timezone information verified > > %%%%%%%%%%% OPCOM 11-NOV-2007 18:19:54.90 %%%%%%%%%%% > > Message from user INTERnet on SIMVAX > > INTERnet Loaded > > > > %RUN-S-PROC ID, identification of created process is 00000211 > > %TCPIP-I-SETLOCAL, setting domain and/or local host > > %TCPIP-I-STARTCOMM, starting communication > > %%%%%%%%%%% OPCOM 11-NOV-2007 18:20:00.41 %%%%%%%%%%% > > Message from user INTERnet on SIMVAX > > INTERnet Started > > > > %TCPIP-I-SETPROTP, setting protocol parameters > > %TCPIP-I-DEFINTE, defining interfaces > > %%%%%%%%%%% OPCOM 11-NOV-2007 18:20:02.48 %%%%%%%%%%% > > Message from user INTERnet on SIMVAX > > INTERnet ACP Created INTERnet interface: QE0 > > > > %TCPIP-I-STARTNAME, starting name service > > > > And thatīs it...once or twice it went further until it sayed something > > with IIRC loading Proxy Image or similar, nevertheless it just hangs > > from that point on. > > > > There is no network environment around here, just a second NIC in the > > Emulator, to which iīm planning to simply TELNET via Crossover Cable > > from my PowerBook. > > > > QE0 is the Ethernet device XQA0: > > > > Interface: QE0 > > IP Addr: 192.168.0.3 NETWRK: 255.255.255.0 BRDCST: > > 192.168.0.255 > > C Addr: C NETWRK: C BRDCST: > > > > Flags: > > Receive buffer: 0 > > > > After TCPIP INstallation i checked the preinstallation tasks, which the > > TCPIP-Installation Manual suggests (Memory, Disk space,...) hereīs the > > output: > > > > $ SHOW DEVICE SYS$SYSDEVICE > > > > Device Device Error Volume Free > > Trans Mnt > > Name Status Count Label Blocks > > Count Cnt > > SIMVAX$DUA0: Mounted 0 OVMSVAXSYS 2391039 > > 149 1 > > > > $ SHOW MEMORY/FULL > > System Memory Resources on 11-NOV-2007 20:02:10.69 > > > > Physical Memory Usage (pages): Total Free In Use > > Modified > > Main Memory (64.00Mb) 131072 105656 25049 > > 367 > > > > Virtual I/O Cache Usage (pages): Total Free In Use > > Maximum > > Cache Memory 2915 0 2915 > > 97791 > > > > Slot Usage (slots): Total Free Resident > > Swapped > > Process Entry Slots 300 288 12 > > 0 > > Balance Set Slots 248 238 10 > > 0 > > > > Dynamic Memory Usage (bytes): Total Free In Use > > Largest > > Nonpaged Dynamic Memory 2919424 2315456 603968 > > 2175808 > > Paged Dynamic Memory 2378240 1632096 746144 > > 1631504 > > > > Paging File Usage (pages): Free Reservable > > Total > > DISK$OVMSVAXSYS:[SYS0.SYSEXE]SWAPFILE.SYS > > 45000 45000 > > 45000 > > DISK$OVMSVAXSYS:[SYS0.SYSEXE]PAGEFILE.SYS > > 122000 97974 > > 122000 > > > > Of the physical pages in use, 19828 pages are permanently allocated to > > OpenVMS. > > > > $ WRITE SYS$OUTPUT F$GETSYI ("FREE GBLPAGES") > > 47318 > > $ WRITE SYS$OUTPUT F$GETSYI ("FREE GBLSECTS") > > 207 > > > > $ RUN SYS$SYSTEM:SYSMAN > > SYSMAN> parameter show sptreq > > %SYSMAN-I-USEACTNOD, a USE ACTIVE has been defaulted on node SIMVAX > > Node SIMVAX: Parameters in use: ACTIVE > > Parameter Name Current Default Minimum Maximum Unit > > Dynamic > > -------------- ------- ------- ------- ------- ---- > > ------- > > SPTREQ 8000 3900 3000 -1 Pages > > > > Seems to be allright IMHO (ok, that doesnīt mean too much :) ) > > > > When i disable the NIC before startup, then the initiallization wents > > through, with a missing interface error of course, but TCPIP gets > > started and i have a l0 (loopback) device. > > > > Deleting the TCPIP$*.DAT files also had no effect, the files get new > > written at config startup, but the initiallization doesnīt work either. > > > > So, whatīs the Problem here, my guess is itīs sitting in front of the > > Computer ;) at least i canīt get rid of the thought that iīve just > > overlooked a simple thing, but what is it? I can see the disk light on the workstation on a "steady on" (the only thing used on that disk is the page file). Yet, the process stays mostly in "HIB" state. I sometimes see it PFW state for a micro instant if I don't blink. Doing a "QUIT" (once I get to the menu) takes a few *minutes* to run. During that time, the disk activity light is steady on again. And again, the process remains mostly on HIB state 99% of the time. Can someone explain why Mozilla would remain in HIB state when it is waiting for memory coming from the page file 99% of the time ? Why isn't it in PFW state ? Since Mozilla comes from Unixland, I would find it hard to believe it is fully AST driven. I realise that in your universe, Mozilla runs fine and my universe is ever so slightly different from yours, but I would still be interested in what sort of programming paradigm would have resulted in Mozilla being in HUB even when waiting to access memory that resides in the page file. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Nov 2007 20:19:47 +0000 (UTC) From: helbig@astro.multiCLOTHESvax.de (Phillip Helbig---remove CLOTHES to reply) Subject: test---ignore Message-ID: test --- ignore ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Nov 2007 16:05:25 -0500 From: "Richard B.
