<runoff#(<rno) is a <pdp-11 program running under <ias or <RSX-11M
to facilitate the
preparation of typed or printed manuscripts, such as memos,
manuals, etc.  ^the user prepares his material 
using one of the standard file editors available (usually 
<edit-11, <edt or <teco).  The user includes not only
textual material, but also control lines which contain the
necessary format commands for <RUNOFF.
Once the user is through entering his material via a file
editor,  <RUNOFF is invoked to produce the formatted material
onto the specified output media.
<RUNOFF will perform the necessary formatting as specified via
the control lines, and will also perform line justification, page
numbering, and titling, to name only a few features that are supported.

The principal benefit of such a program is that files
prepared for use with it may be easily edited and corrected.
Small or large amounts of material may be added or deleted, and
unchanged material need not be retyped.
After the user completes a set of changes to a <RUNOFF source
file, <RUNOFF may then be invoked again to produce 
a new copy which is properly paged and formatted.
Therefore, documentation may thus be updated as necessary without
requiring extensive retyping.

In addition to the text formatting capabilities, arap has added
the capability for creating complex scientific equations (the .EQ and .EEQ
commands). Super/subscripting movement in 1/8 line increments
(.SETSS and %@, %~)
, automatic
overbars (%$, .OB), and support for scientific/greek character set (%%).
Horizontal half-spacing is allowed in equation mode (.EQ) and justification
is accomplished also with horizontal half-spacing.
Expression substitution is provided using the .SUB and .SUBD commands.
