The RUNOFF command format is as follows:

where the FILES-11 file "infil" must have a filetype of
"RNO". A filetype other than "RNO" may be used, but must be
explicitly specified in addition to the filename. A "filename" of
question mark "?" will type a file of help documentation
from the system disk.
The default output file type is .LST and .TOC for the Table of Contents.

The combination of the previously described <RUNOFF
command format is called a command string. Command strings are
used to describe to RUNOFF the file to be processed, and any options
to use while processing the file.
Some examples of <RUNOFF command strings are:

The file MEMO.RNO will be processed and the output directed to the users
terminal.
.leb;RNO ,MEMO=MEMO/UL:L

The file MEMO.RNO will be processed and a Table of Contents file generated. 
The output will be directed to the users terminal.
.leb;RNO MEMO/SP,MEMO/SP=MEMO/UL:B

The file MEMO.RNO will be processed and both an output listing file as
well as a Table of Contents file generated.
.leb;RNO MEMO/SP/PA:3:9=MEMO/UL:B

The file MEMO.RNO will be processed and only pages three to nine output to
the listing file.

of these and other switches will be described later on in this
document. The only purpose of presenting these switches now is to show
the RUNOFF command syntax.
.HL 2 File Specifications

Referring back to the RUNOFF command format, the filename
is actually called the file specification of the source file.
In the description of the command format, the filename of the 
source file could be specified, and the system would then
generate the appropriate default values for any missing values
within the file specification.

An <ias file specification has the following form:

In this specification, <dev must be a legal device code. The default
Value is <sy0: (i.e. the system disk). The <uic must be a valid User
Identification Code.
The default <UIC is the user's login <UIC, or if the user has set his
default <UIC to a different <UIC, then to whatever the default <UIC is
currently set.
The filename is any 1- to 9-character
Alphanumeric string which specifies a file name. 
There is no default value for this field.
Typ is
a 1- to 3-character alphanumeric file type.
The default file type for RUNOFF source files is RNO.
Finally, VER is a number
which is the version number of the file.  This field also
can be omitted since it defaults to the
highest existing version number for the file.
This number, if specified, must be an ^&<octal\& digit
greater than zero.
