Watson Co-chairman, VAX Internals Working Group As part of the feedback that VAX SIG members can give to Digital about their products, the VAX Internals Working Group would like to begin collecting a VMS Version 5.0 wish list. Your ideas are ardently desired. We are not looking for a "bug list" but expressions of things that you would like to see included in VMS in the next major release or releases. For instance, how many of you feel it would be desirable for VMS to fully support a Unix environment for those programmers who have been trained in Unix? What parts of Unix should be included, and what could be done without? Should there be an emphasis on improving the raw performance of VMS? Or would effort put into developing a "non-stop" environment be more desireable? Should Digital make a major attempt to provide true load balancing on a cluster, with processes automatically switching between CPU's to run on the least busy member of the cluster? What tools for program development or system management do you feel are lacking and should be added? Should there be an effort at making windowing easy (like Jim Downward's WinDECs suggestion)? We intend to gather all the suggestions together into a hopefully coherent wish list that will be presented to DEC. Don't be shy; ask for the sky. I will be collating the submissions and they will be presented at a BOF session in New Orleans, with additional ideas being solicted at that time. We haven't quite decided how to go from there -- a vote via the Pageswapper or what -- but eventually the list will be passed on to DEC for their consideration in planning the future of our operating system. Please send your written submissions to: V5 Wish List c/o Allen Watson Manager, Systems Technology THE RECORD 150 River Street Hackensack, NJ 07643 3 PAGESWAPPER - May 1985 - Volume 6 Number 11 Editor's Workfile Editor's Workfile by Larry Kilgallen, Pageswapper Editor For all those who asked, I notice that the CERBERUS program described in the January 1985 Pageswapper (volume 6, number 7) is now available from DECUS library. Preview of the Spring 1985 Symposium Jack D. Cundiff, VAX System SIG Symposium Coordinator Joe Angelico, VAX System SIG Assistant Symposium Coordinator We want to take this opportunity to invite you to the 1985 Spring Symposium in New Orleans, Louisiana, May 27-31. The Symposium is always an exciting week and this spring will be no exception. In fact, presentations on VMS Version 4.0, VAX performance and large VAX technologies should make it even better. For those of you interested in pre-symposium seminars on Sunday, May 26, the SIG is sponsoring 4 sessions. The first is LISP and AI Programming Techniques. This tutorial is designed for persons who would like to learn LISP on their own, but need a foundation. The approach will be to cover the basic structures of LISP using only those features which are common to almost all LISP systems (although some special mention will be given to COMMON LISP features). The approach will be a fairly technical level. TOPICS: o THE LISP approach to data representation (this will attempt to help one understand how LISP deals with data) o Basic LISP functions and what they do o How one approaches problems in LISP o Some simple techniques common to LISP and Al programming o Suggested approaches to self education in LISP 4 PAGESWAPPER - May 1985 - Volume 6 Number 11 Preview of the Spring 1985 Symposium The second is System Management For The New VAX System Manager. This seminar is designed for the new VAX System Manager, with or without prior non-VAX System Management experience. The emphasis will be on the concepts and philosophies of VAX System Management (not a detailed tutorial). Reference points for standard documentation will be given. TOPICS: o Installation of the VAX o System startup o Operations techniques o General management responsibilities Lecture periods will be followed by question and answer sessions. The third is VAX Performance Monitoring Fundamentals. The emphasis of this seminar is on the methodology of VAX Performance Monitoring. This seminar will be aimed at system managers or anyone responsible for system availability, tuning, performance, planning and scheduling. TOPICS: o Monitor Principles o Monitor Data Sources o Monitor Review, including practical examples The fourth is VMS Tuning - System Parameters & RMS File Configuration. The presentation will be in two parts: Part I will cover SYSGEN and user account parameters. The definitions of the parameters, how to observe their effects on the system, system structures and mechanisms controlled by them, and how to set them to handle various workloads will be studied. Part II will cover the analysis and definition of RMS files for efficient access to ISAM and sequential files. The use of RMS utilities to tune file characteristics for access by high-level languages and Digital's various layered products will be the main focus of this part. Outline of Part I (SYSGEN parameters): 5 PAGESWAPPER - May 1985 - Volume 6 Number 11 Preview of the Spring 1985 Symposium o Process management o System paging mechanisms and page caches o Automatic working set adjustment o Swapping and swapper trimming o Hints and kinks in VMS tuning Outline of Part II (file tuning): o RMS File Overview o RMS Utilities for Configuring Files o Idiosyncracies of Global Buffers o Hints and Kinks in RMS Tuning Once we have gotten you over the weekend, plan for a full week of VAX sessions and related VAX sessions - the streams for these sessions will follow. Just some of the highlights are the novice and advanced software clinics, the novice and advanced question and answer and the hardware questions and answers. The hardware and advanced questions and answers will again be equipped with a telephone connection to the VAX developers back home to allow them to again participate in the sessions. There are many sessions on VAX/VMS 4.0 including performance and system parameters as well as MicroVAX, VAXELN, hardware and security features. 6 PAGESWAPPER - May 1985 - Volume 6 Number 11 Roadmap for New Orleans Roadmap for New Orleans This is a ROADMAP to the Spring 1985 DECUS Symposium for those interested in VAX topics. It outlines all sessions being sponsored by the VAX Systems SIG and includes some related sessions sponsored by other SIGs as well. Sessions are grouped into several differing categories. These categories are: MANAGEMENT GENERAL ADVANCED TECHNICAL REAL TIME INTERMEDIATE NOVICE HARDWARE This document is intended to be your starting guideline for the Spring Symposium. It is not exhaustive, and certainly does not reflect the sessions that will develop here in New Orleans such as BOFs. DECUS works because you participate and contribute to our common activities. In order to enchance that participation we have made a special effort to schedule all WORKING GROUP sessions early in the week. Join with these working groups and get acquainted. It will also help you get a better understanding of that working group's sessions for the rest of the symposium. This is the first way to become more active in our SIG! We need your insights and HELP, so come and buttonhole us. The SIG leadership will be at these working group sessions. If you have a session you would like to present or a topic for the working group to consider for the Fall Symposium in Anaheim, please let the working group chairman or a SIG representative know. Sessions happen from your input to the SIG. The preliminary planning for Anaheim happens Thursday evening during this symposium week so make your desires known to us. Please let us know if this preliminary ROADMAP is useful to you. What can be done to improve it? What should we (the VAX Systems SIG) do to continue to develop these kinds of materials? What do you want for a SIG guide? A symposium guide? 7 PAGESWAPPER - May 1985 - Volume 6 Number 11 NOVICE SESSIONS BEGIN END DAY ROOM SESSION NAME SPEAKER SESSION CHAIR _____ ____ ___ ___________ _________________________________ __________________ _________________ 1200 1300 MON BALLROOM A VMS PROGRAMMING ENVIRONMENT ABRAMSON ROBERT KOORS MARK 1700 1800 MON MAGNOLIA VAX COMMERCIAL WORKING GROUP BOYD BOB BOYD BOB 1700 1800 MON BALLROOM A MICROVMS FUTURES MORSE KATHY SIZEMORE DOUG 1800 1900 MON NORWICH AI WORKING GROUP OPENING SLATER DAVID SLATER DAVID 1800 1900 MON SALON B VAX SPM PERFORMANCE MONITOR LEGERLOTZ AL MATHIEU THOMAS 1900 2000 MON ROSEDOWN VAXCLUSTER WORKING GROUP MEETING JOHNSON KEN JOHNSON KEN 1900 1930 MON BALLROOM C VAXELN PRODUCT PANEL MICOR SYS DEV ROBERTSON LARRY 2030 2130 MON BELLE CHASE AI BUZZWORDS PANEL & DISC STERN JOSEPH SLATER DAVID 0900 1000 TUE BALLROOM C VAX/VMS NOVICE REAL-TIME PROCESSING ROBBINS ROBERT FRAYNE DENNIS 0900 1000 TUE WINDSOR VAX/SIG LUG CHAIR MEETING SCHMIDT DAVE SCHMIDT DAVE 1230 1330 TUE BALLROOM C VAX SYS MGMT WORKING GROUP REHSE SUSAN REHSE SUSAN 1500 1600 TUE BALLROOM B NOVICE SYS MGT Q & A REHSE SUSAN REHSE SUSAN 1500 1600 TUE BALLROOM A CLUSTER MANAGEMENT VIEWPOINT LEVANDOWSKI MICHAEL KITCHEN EMILY 1600 1700 TUE WINDSOR NOVICE SYSTEM MANAGERS CLINIC CLINIC ANGELICO JOE 1700 1900 TUE WINDSOR VAX NOVICE SOFTWARE CLINIC GREBUS GARY GREBUS GARY 0900 1000 WED BALLROOM B INTOR TO VMS DCL PROCEDURES MCCLINTON ART BAILEY ELIZABETH 1000 1100 WED BALLROOM B VAX NOVICE RMS AND DISK TUNING JALBERT JEFF CUNDIFF JACK 1200 1300 WED BALLROOM B PERFORMANCE MEASURMENT MISERERE JAMES TIHOR STEPHEN 1700 1800 WED BALLROOM B HOW TO CONFIGURE A VAX SYSTEM FULLER BILL REHSE SUSAN 1000 1100 THU BALLROOM C VAX USER ACCOUNT MANAGEMENT SZEP STEVEN HOPP JIM 1100 1200 THU BALLROOM A VAX/VNS DOCUMENTATION VMS WRITING GROUP BAKER JUNE 1130 1200 THU NORWICH AI WORKING GROUP CLOSING MTG SLATER DAVID SLATER DAVID 1200 1230 THU GRAND SALON VMS LOST FILE RECOVERY EBINGER LARRY BAILEY ELIZABETH 1400 1500 THU BALLROOM C VMS FORIEGN TAPE MAGIC DANFORTH VIANA TOM 1500 1600 THU NORWICH VAX TUNING USING SPM DAY GARY DOW-PLEINES BARBARA 1700 1800 THU BALLROOM C 20/20:INTEG.SPRDSHT.MOD.PROG HO WENDY COSSEY DAVE 0900 0930 FRI SALON C FORTRAN & SYSTEM SERVICES HENLINE PAMELA KEITH KRISTI 1000 1130 FRI BALLROOM A VAX SIR'S GREBUS GARY AURBACH RICHARD 1000 1100 FRI SALON C VAX SYSTEM SERVICE CALLS LEVY WALTER TIHOR STEPHEN 1400 1530 FRI BALLROOM C HOW TO INSURE SUCCESSFUL PROJECT GERAGHTY CHRIS BAKER JUNE 8 PAGESWAPPER - May 1985 - Volume 6 Number 11 ADVANCED SESSIONS BEGIN END DAY ROOM SESSION NAME SPEAKER SESSION CHAIR _____ ____ ___ ___________ _________________________________ __________________ _________________ 1930 2130 MON BALLROOM A JUST A VMS MODEST PROPOSAL DOWNWARD JIM DOWNWARD JIM 2130 2300 MON BELLE CHASE BUILDING EXPERTSYSTEM USING OPS5 PRESSMAN JOHN GOLDEN DON 0900 1000 TUE BALLROOM A VMS VAXCLUSTER INTERNALS ALTMANN KERBEY KEITH KRISTI 1000 1100 TUE BALLROOM C VAX REAL-TIME HINTS & KINKS ROBERTSON LARRY BERNSTEIN CHARLES 1000 1130 TUE BALLROOM B VAX SPM & SYSTEM TUNING LEGERLOTZ AL GOLDEN DON 1130 1230 TUE BALLROOM C IMAGE PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS HILDEBRAND JOHN SCHMIDT DAVE 1200 1230 TUE BALLROOM A 8600 CLUSTER PERFORMANCE LEVANDOWSKI MICHEAL TIHOR STEPHEN 1300 1330 TUE BALLROOM A SWAPPER BEHAVIOR HASLOCK NIGEL KURJAN PHILLIP 1330 1500 TUE BALLROOM A VAXCLUSTER USER PANEL PANEL BULLARD DON 1800 1900 TUE NORWICH INTERNALS WORKING GROUP FRIEDBERG CARL FRIEDBERG CARL 1800 1900 TUE BALLROOM B VAXCLUSTER TROUBLESHOOTING JOHNSON KENNETH KURJAN PHILLIP 1000 1100 WED BALLROOM C CREATING A VMS INSTALLABLE PROD.
