******************************************************************************* FRED Interface This is the installation and upgrade procedure for the FRED interface. Please read the miscellaneous section at the end of the file first. ******************************************************************************* Installation ------------ 1) Define the directory that contains the FRED files to FRED_LIBRARY. 2) Define the device for printing the keypads to FRED_KEYPAD_PRINTER. Define the locations of FRED$VT100_KEYPAD.LIST and FRED$VT200_KEYPAD.LIST to FRED_VT100_KEYPAD and FRED_VT200_KEYPAD, respectively. Define the location of the FRED help library to FRED_HELPLIB. 3) Enter: EDIT/TPU/SECTION=evesecini/command=FRED_LIBRARY:BUILD.TPU The interface will build itself. You need to monitor the messages in the MESSAGE buffer to verify that there are no errors. The build procedure completes by saving the interface section file in FRED_LIBRARY:FRED.TPU$SECTION. The logical name TPUSECINI should be created to point to the above section file. Create a system global symbol: FRED :== EDIT/TPU/SECTION=TPUSECINI You can also create a /COMMAND file that contains some startup commands for even more versatility. Update Of The Section File -------------------------- To update the FRED section file: 1) Edit the TPU procedure to be added/updated using the FRED interface. 2) Compile the TPU procedure (you can use ALT_KEYS...PF3 on the FRED interface). 3) Save the section file using ALT_KEYS...6. 4) If the section file is installed, you MUST do a replace of the section file while in INSTALL (FRED.INSTALL will do this !!!). Miscellaneous ------------- The impetus behind designing and implementing the FRED interface was the inability of EDIT/EDT to support our ever expanding needs. I have tried to maintain some compatability with EDIT/EDT in designing the VT220 keypad. Thinking of the VT220 keypad...FRED now supports both the VT200 and VT100 type keyboards. FRED checks for the terminal type and implements the keyboard that matchs the terminal type. FRED is made up of the DEC EVE interface, various TPU procedures from DECUS, and our own routines. The procedures in FRED have the following prefixes: EVE$: DEC supplied procedures. EVE_: " " " DECUS$: Procedures gleaned from various DECUS submissions (the names were changed to reduce my confusion and so that I would know where they came from if I had a problem later). FRED$: Procedures that I wrote, or ones from DEC and DECUS that I changed to suit my needs. You MUST be using VMS V4.4 or later to use FRED. Be aware not all of the procedures included in FRED are fully functional, they will be at my earliest convenience. I wish to thank all those people out there who through their efforts have made my life much easier thru TPU.
