About EVE This manual contains documentation for Farm Credit Banks VAX users who want information on using EVE, the Extensible VAX Editor. EVE is written in the VAXTPU programming language, which is DEC's "high-performance programmable text processing utility." Because of this, EVE has been set up on our system to function very similar to the WPS editor that has been used in the past. In addition to the standard editor functions, however, EVE has the capability of spawning a DCL process, split window editing, and much more. For additional information on the uses of EVE, see the User's Guide to EVE in the VAX/VMS documentation Volume 3B. B. Conventions Used in This Manual Unless otherwise specified, the following conventions have been followed in preparing this documentation: Indicates pressing the RETURN key Indicates pressing a specified key on the keyboard where "XXX" will be the name indicated on that key (i.e., = press TAB key). GOLD/M Indicates pressing the GOLD key followed by pressing the character indicated after the slash...in this case "M" for "Menu" CTRL/C Indicates holding down the CTRL key WHILE pressing the character indicated after the slash...in this case "C" C. Special Note on Terminals The EVE editor and the special function keys that are defined in this manual are set up to run on a VT200 series terminal (i.e., VT220, VT241, etc.). There are some instances in which a VT100 series terminal or a VT100 emulator (such as DECmate communications, Rainbow Terminal mode, or B20 "Yojna") will not function as described in this manual. Listed below are known instances where a VT100 or VT100 emulator will not function as described: F11 (Change Direction) F12 (Beginning/End of Line) F13 (Erase Previous Word) PF4 (Del Char) FOR DECMATE USERS: To correct the problems described above, issue the following commands from the DECmate Main Menu - SO (to take you to the System Options menu) TM (to take you to the Terminal Mode menu) 227 (to select VT220 - 7 bit Terminal Mode) *** ***For DECmate Ver 1.5, use "DECmate " for DECmate Terminal Mode instead of "227 " D. Creating DCL Command Files When EVE is used to create a new command file (i.e., no file of the name indicated in the EVE command is found and the extension is ".com"...as in FILE.COM), the standard command file template will automatically be brought into the file. An example of this template is shown below: ============================================================ $ ! COMMAND FILE NAME $ set noon $ goto start $ !+ $ ! Title: $ ! $ ! $ ! To create a document using EVE, from the $ enter the following: EVE filename.ext Where "filename" is the name of the file you want to create/change. For a new document, the following screen will appear: ==================================================================== [end of file] ____________________________________________________________________ Buffer FILENAME.EXT Insert Forward Editing new file; could not find USERDISK:[DIRECTORY]FILENAME.EXT; ==================================================================== You may now begin entering the text for this file. B. Editing/Changing a File (Already Created) To access a file that has already been created (i.e., to edit or change the file), enter the following at the $ : EVE filename.ext Where "filename" is the name of the file you want to create/change. NOTE: There are additional ways that may be easier for you to use when you want to access specific files. A few of these are described below: EVE To access the last file you worked with during this log session (i.e., the file you just exited). NOTE: The file edited using this format of the EVE command will be the file defined by the logical name "LASTEDIT." EVE filename Without an extension, EVE will edit the first file found in your directory with that name, (i.e., with the files "filename.COM" and "filename.DAT" both in the directory, the file "filename.COM" would be edited using this format of the EVE command). EVE f*.txt If a wild card (i.e., "*") is used in the filename with the EVE command, EVE will search your directory for all possible files and then prompt you to select the file you want to access. After typing any of the commands above to edit/change a file, the following screen will then appear: ==================================================================== in this area will be the text you have already entered in this file. [end of file] ____________________________________________________________________ Buffer FILENAME.EXT Insert Forward 3 lines read from file USERDISK:[DIRECTORY]FILENAME.EXT;1 ==================================================================== You may now begin editing/changing the text for this file. C. - Exiting EVE To EXIT the file you are editing (using the EVE editor) and STORE the additions/changes you have made, use the F10, CTRL/Z, GOLD/E, or GOLD/F command. To EXIT the file you are editing WITHOUT STORING the additions/changes you have made, us the GOLD/K or GOLD/Q command. See the "Using EVE - Stored Keys, ETC." SECTION FOR ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS ON USING THE COMMANDS TO EXIT A FILE (I.E., THE COMMANDS LISTED IN THE PREVIOUS TWO PARAGRAPHS). D - RECOVERING AN EVE FILE If you are using EVE and you get logged off of the system by Watchdog or for any other reason do not properly exit the EVE file and store the changes you have made, the following command can be used: EVER filename.ext Where "filename.ext" is the original file you began editing. This command will recover any additions/changes you made during your last edit session for this file. IV - USING EVE - STORED KEYS, ETC. The following documentation has been sequenced in the order the keys are found on the keyboard...from left to right. That is, "main keyboard" area first, "help/arrow" area keys next, the "mini-pad" keys next, and the GOLD function keys last. A. - Main Keyboard Area F10 - Exit The F10 key (located on the top row of gray keys - to the left of the key) is used as one method of exiting the file and storing the changes made to that file. When the F10 key is pressed, EVE will file the document, tell you how many lines have been filed, and return you to the $ prompt. For additional methods of exiting, see GOLD/E, GOLD/F, and CTRL/Z. F11 - Change Direction The F11 key (also labeled on the top row of gray keys) is used to change the direction in which the cursor is moving. When you first get into a file, the default direction is "FORWARD" (shown on the right-hand side of the highlighted line at the bottom of the screen). When F11 is pressed, this "direction indicator" will be changed to ready "REVERSE" and any movement keys (WORD, LINE, NEXT SCREEN, etc.) will move BACK towards the top of the document. If the direction indicator is set to "REVERSE," pressing F11 will change the direction indicator to "FORWARD." For additional methods of changing the direction indicator, see KP0 and KP1. F12 - Beginning/End of Line The F12 key (also labeled on the top row of gray keys) is used to move to the beginning of the line or to the end of the line. If the direction indicator at the bottom of the screen is set to "FORWARD," the F12 key will move the cursor to the last character of the line. If, however, the direction indicator is set to "REVERSE," the F12 key will move the cursor to the first character of the line. For instruction on how to change the direction indicator, see F11 --or-- KP1 and KP0. For additional methods of moving to the beginning or end of a line, see KP2. F13 - Erase Previous Word The F13 key (also labeled on the top row of gray keys) is used to erase the word positioned to the left of the cursor. To erase a word, place the cursor on the character immediately to the right of the word you want to erase and press the key. In this case, a "word" includes all characters (including any spaces or tabs) to the left of the cursor up to and including the first character of the next available word. A is also considered a "word" by itself. This key is sometimes referred to as the "RUB WORD" key or the "LINEFEED" key. For additional methods of removing characters/words from the file, see PF3, PF4, and CTRL/U. NOTE: The WORD/CHAR key (sometimes referred to as the "RUB CHAR" key) removes one character to the left of the cursor as usual; however, further documentation on this key is not included in this manual. F14 - Insert/Overstrike The F14 key (the first gray key to the right of the key on the top row of keys) is used to change EVE from "Insert" mode to "Overstrike" mode. The Insert/Overstrike mode is displayed in the highlighted line at the bottom of the screen -- just to the left of the "Forward/Reverse" direction indicator. This is a toggle option, i.e., the first time you press F14 the mode will change to Overstrike; the next time you press F14, it will change to Insert; and so on back and forth between the two. Insert mode is the default that is displayed when you first edit/create a file. If you are typing in insert mode, the characters will be inserted between (to the left of) the cursor and the characters already in the document. This is the standard format for previous editors (EDT, WPS, and WPS+) on the VAX system. Overstrike mode is accessed by pressing F14 (when EVE is presently in insert mode). If you are typing in overstrike mode, the characters will type over (i.e., replace) any characters already in the file. CTRL/B - Recall Commands The CTRL/B command recalls the previously entered command that was issued using the or CTRL/B ("recall") command. When CTRL/B is pressed, the most recently entered command will appear on the "Command:" line. You may then edit that command AND/OR press to enter the command. When CTRL/B is pressed again, the next to the last command entered will appear on the "Command:" line. Successive CTRL/B commands will recall all commands issued (including the command EVE used to get into the file you are editing). NOTE: The "Up Arrow" (i.e., the arrow key pointed up that is located immediately below the key) will also recall the most recently entered command at the "Command:" line. CTRL/E - End of Line The CTRL/E command moves the cursor to the end of the current line. When CTRL/E is pressed, the cursor will be placed after the last character of the current line. NOTE: If the cursor is already at the end of the line, a message indicating this will be displayed at the bottom of the screen. CTRL/H - Beginning of Line The CTRL/H command moves the cursor to the beginning of the current line. When CTRL/H is pressed, the cursor will be place on the first character of the current line. NOTE: If the cursor is already at the beginning of the line, a message indicating this will be displayed at the bottom of the screen. CTRL/L - List Buffers The CTRL/L command jumps you to the "SHOW" buffer which contains a list of all available buffers. After you press CTRL/L, the last two buffers in the buffer list will be displayed on your screen. The "Buffer" indicator at the bottom of your screen will indicate you are in the "SHOW" buffer. The standard editing keys can be used to move around in this list to view additional buffers. An example of a buffer listing for the file that you are editing (or one that you have used a GOLD/G and brought into a new buffer) is shown below: =========================================================================== Buffer: Name: FILENAME.EXT Mapped to 0 windows Input File: USERDISK:[USERNAME]FILENAME.EXT;1 Output File: USERDISK:[USERNAME]FILENAME.EXT;1 Contains 21 lines Max_lines: 4294967295 Maximum line size: 984 characters Left Margin: 1 Right Margin: 79 Tabs every 8 columns Forward Insert =========================================================================== An example of a buffer listing for a system buffer (such as the "PASTE" buffer) is shown below: =========================================================================== Buffer: PASTE_BUFFER Name: INSERT HERE Mapped to 0 windows Input File: Output File: Contains 32 lines Max_lines: 4294967295 Maximum line size: 984 characters Left Margin: 1 Right Margin: 79 Tabs every 8 columns System Modified Forward Insert =========================================================================== CTRL/R - Remember The CTRL/R command is used to store the sequence of keystrokes defined during the use of the LEARN command (NOTE: LEARN is a command used from the command prompt). After CTRL/R is pressed, you will be prompted to press the key that you want to use to recall the keystrokes you have entered (e.g., press and that key will then be assigned the keystrokes you have defined). After the key has been selected, the "learn" sequence is ended and you will be returned to edit mode for the file you are in. NOTE: This key will ONLY be effective for the edit session you are presently in; i.e., you will have to redefine the key the next time you edit this file! For additional information on the LEARN command, see the "EVE COMMANDS" section in this manual. CTRL/U - Erase to Start of Line The CTRL/U command is used to erase all characters from the where the cursor is located to the beginning of the line the cursor is on. After CTRL/U is pressed, all characters to the left of the cursor up to and including the first character of the line the cursor is on will be erased and the cursor will be placed at the beginning of the line. For additional methods of removing characters/words from the file, see PF3, PF4, and F13. NOTE: The WORD/CHAR key (sometimes referred to as the "RUB CHAR" key) removes one character to the left of the cursor as usual; however, further documentation on this key is not included in this manual. CTRL/V - Quote (Enter Non-Alpha Special Characters) The CTRL/V command allows you to press a key(s) that will be used to insert a special character into the buffer you are currently working. With the CTRL/V command you can insert a form feed, a bell, or other nonprinting characters such as control characters. You can also insert printing characters, such as letters and punctuation marks, that are bound or programmed to other keys. When CTRL/V is pressed, you will be prompted to enter the key to be added (for instance, CTRL/G for bell). After the key you want to add is selected, the character(s) will then be inserted into the file you are working on. NOTE: All non-printable characters except "FORMFEED (ff)," "RETURN (cr)," and "LINEFEED (lf)" are shown in eve as a backwards question mark. To view the special characters [ASCII(0) - ASCII(8) AND ASCII(14) - ASCII(31)] and see the "translation" of the backwards question mark, see the GOLD/V command. For additional methods of adding special characters, see GOLD/A. CTRL/W - Refresh Screen The CTRL/W command allows you to refresh the screen to determine exactly what characters are included in the file/buffer you are working on. When CTRL/W is pressed, the screen will clear briefly and then will repaint all characters and command lines that are associated with the portion of the file you are working on. An example of when to use this command is when a message informing you that you have just received new mail is displayed on your screen. This message is sometimes displayed in the middle of the file you are currently working on and ends up covering up characters you have entered into the file; therefore, to get this message off of your screen and see the characters that are actually in the file, use the CTRL/W command. NOTE: Messages that appear at the bottom of the EVE screen (such as the one described above for receipt of new mail) will be placed in the "MESSAGE" buffer. To refer to them later, jump to this buffer using the GOLD/J command. CTRL/Z - Exit The CTRL/Z command is used as one method of exiting the file and storing the changes made to that file. When CTRL/Z is pressed, EVE will file the document, tell you how many lines have been filed, and return you to the $ prompt. For additional methods of exiting, see GOLD/E, GOLD/F, and F10. B. - Help/Arrow Keys Area HELP - Help The HELP key (the key marked on the top row of keys) is used to find out more information on some of the special functions used in EVE. When the key is pressed, a screen displaying the F11-F14 keys and the Help/Arrow keypad area appears. To see a description of the function of any key shown, press that key. Press to return to your editing session. For example: If you press the key, a description of the FIND function appears on the screen. After reading the description of the key, you can press again to return to the original diagram, press another key for help on another function, or press to return to your editing session. For additional methods of finding "Help," see GOLD/H. DO - Enter EVE/TPU Commands The DO key (the key marked on the top row of keys) allows you to enter an EVE command. When the key is pressed, the prompt "Command:" appears at the bottom of the screen and the cursor is positioned next to this prompt. At this point you can enter any of the EVE commands and press . You can repeat the last command entered by pressing the key twice. NOTE: The CTRL/B command or the "Up Arrow" (i.e., the arrow key pointed up that is located immediately below the key) can be used to recall the most recently entered command(s) at the "Command:" line. For additional information on the available commands for EVE, see the "EVE COMMANDS" section in this manual. For additional methods of entering EVE/TPU commands, see GOLD/[. FIND - Search for a String The FIND key (the key marked above the arrow keys) allows you to enter a string of characters to search for. After pressing the key, you will be prompted to enter the desired search string (the prompt will be either "Forward Find:" or "Reverse Find:"). Enter the phrase to be searched for and press . EVE will scan the entire file for the specified string of characters in the direction specified by the Direction Indicator. NOTE: If the search string is not found in the direction shown by the Direction Indicator (at the bottom of the screen), but it is, however, found in the opposite direction, the following prompt will appear at the bottom of the screen: "Found in **** direction. Go There?" (where **** is the opposite direction of the current Direction Indicator) To go to the occurrence of the search string found in the opposite direction, answer "Y " (or just press ). If you do not want to go to the occurrence found in the opposite direction, answer "N ." - To continue searching for the same string of characters, press the key twice (i.e., ). For instruction on how to change the direction indicator, see F11 --or-- KP1 and KP0. For additional methods of searching for a specified string of characters, see GOLD/, (GOLD/comma). INSERT HERE - Insert Removed Text The INSERT HERE key (the key marked above the arrow keys) allows you to place removed text elsewhere in the file. To insert removed text into the file, place the cursor where you want the first character of the removed text to appear and press . The previously removed text will then be placed in that location in the file. NOTE: Only the most recently removed piece of text is held in the (also known as ) buffer. For additional information on removing text, see SELECT and REMOVE --or-- the mini-keypad "PERIOD" key (SEL) and the mini-keypad "HYPHEN" key (CUT). For additional methods of inserting text elsewhere in the file, see the mini-keypad "COMMA" key (PASTE). REMOVE - Remove Selected Text The REMOVE key (the key marked above the arrow keys) erases any selected (highlighted) text. To remove text, select the text to be removed (the selected text will be highlighted) then press the key. The removed text will be placed in the (a.k.a. ) buffer. For additional information on selecting text, see SELECT or the mini-keypad "PERIOD" key (SEL). For additional information on the or buffer, see INSERT HERE or the mini-keypad "COMMA" key (PASTE). SELECT - Begin/Cancel Selecting Text The SELECT key (the key marked key and then move the cursor to the end of the desired text. The text can then be removed using the or key. To cancel the selection of text, press the key. Move the cursor to the last character of the text you want to copy and press GOLD/. The text will be placed in the paste buffer. D - GOLD Key Functions GOLD/A - Add Special Character (Non-Alphabetic) The GOLD/A command allows you to insert a special character into the buffer in which you are currently working. With the GOLD/A command you can insert a form feed, a bell, or other nonprinting characters such as control characters. You can also insert any ASCII character using the decimal code for the character. When GOLD/A is pressed, you will be prompted to enter the decimal code for the ASCII character (for instance, "7 " for bell). After entering the decimal code, the character(s) will then be inserted into the file you are working on. For additional methods of adding special characters, see CTRL/V. GOLD/B - Bottom The GOLD/B (GOLD/"Bottom Document") command allows you to move to the bottom of the current buffer you are working in. After the GOLD/B keys are pressed, the system will search for the bottom of the file and the cursor will then be placed at "[End of File]." GOLD/C - Center Line The GOLD/C (GOLD/"Center") command allows you to center the current line between the left and right margin. To use the GOLD/C command, place the cursor anywhere on the line to be centered and press GOLD/C. The entire contents of that line will then be centered between the current margins. GOLD/D - Enter DCL command The GOLD/D (GOLD/"DCL") command allows you to enter a DCL command while editing a file (the results of the DCL command will be placed in the DCL buffer). After the GOLD/D keys are pressed, the "DCL Command:" prompt will appear at the bottom of the screen. Enter the DCL command you wish to use (for example, "DIR "). After the DCL command is entered, the message "Creating DCL subprocess" appears at the bottom of the screen, then the screen changes to "split screen" mode with the current buffer shown at the top and the DCL buffer displayed at the bottom. Shortly, the results of the DCL command you issued will be displayed in the DCL buffer and your cursor will return to the current buffer (top half of the screen). NOTE: The DCL buffer can be edited and used like any other buffer (for instance, you can select and cut information from the DCL buffer and then paste it back into another buffer). GOLD/E - Exit The GOLD/E (GOLD/"Exit") command is used as one method of exiting the file and storing the changes made to that file. When GOLD/E is pressed, EVE will file the document, tell you how many lines have been filed, and return you to the $ prompt. For additional methods of exiting, see GOLD/F, F10, and CTRL/Z. GOLD/F - Exit (File Document) The GOLD/F (GOLD/"File") command is used as one method of exiting the file and storing the changes made to that file. When GOLD/F is pressed, EVE will file the document, tell you how many lines have been filed, and return you to the $ prompt. For additional methods of exiting, see GOLD/E, F10, and CTRL/Z. GOLD/G - Get File (to New Buffer) The GOLD/G (GOLD/"Get") command is used to bring in the contents of a file into a new buffer. After pressing the GOLD/G keys, the prompt "File to get:" will appear at the bottom of the screen. Enter the name of the file you want to bring in (for example: NEWFILE.TXT ). Be sure to include the disk and/or directory name IF different from the disk/directory you are presently in (i.e., USERDISK:[USER.OA]FILENAME.TXT ). After the contents of the file you "got" are in the new buffer, you can then edit both files (by using the GOLD/J command to "jump" between the original buffer and this new buffer). To view the contents of both files at the same time, refer to the "Split Window" (GOLD/S) command. GOLD/H - Help The GOLD/H (GOLD/"Help) command is used to find out more information on some of the special functions used in EVE. When the GOLD/H keys are pressed, a screen displaying the F11-F14 keys and the Help/Arrow keypad area appears. To see a description of the function of any key shown, press that key. Press to return to your editing session. For example: If you press the key, a description of the FIND function appears on the screen. After reading the description of the key, you can press the key to return to the original diagram, press another key for help on another function, or press to return to your editing session. Pressing GOLD/H a second time will bring a list of EVE "commands" that help is available on. For additional methods of finding "Help," see . GOLD/I - Include File (in Current Buffer) The GOLD/I (GOLD/"Include") command is used to bring in the contents of a file into the buffer you are currently in. After pressing the GOLD/I keys, the prompt "File to include:" will appear at the bottom of the screen. Enter the name of the file you want to bring in (for example: NEWFILE.TXT ). Be sure to include the disk and/or directory name IF different from the disk/directory you are presently in (i.e., USERDISK:[USER.OA]FILENAME.TXT ). After the contents of the file you "included" are in the buffer, you can then edit the text in the buffer as usual. GOLD/J - Jump to Another Buffer The GOLD/J (GOLD/"Jump") command is used to "jump" between the buffers you are using. After pressing the GOLD/J keys, the prompt "Buffer Name:" will appear at the bottom of the screen. Enter the name of the buffer you want to jump to (i.e., DCL ). The "Buffer" indicator in the highlighted portion of the screen will then change to indicate the buffer you have jumped to. NOTE: You do not have to enter the full name of the buffer you want to jump to, just enough of the name to make it unique. When you enter the name or part of the name at the "Buffer Name:" prompt, EVE attempts to match the characters entered against all current buffer names and will jump to the first match it finds. The most common reason for jumping between buffers is to move text from one buffer (for example, the DCL buffer or the buffer for a file you used GOLD/G to get) to the main buffer to be included in the file you are trying to create/edit. For additional methods of jumping between buffers, see GOLD/L. GOLD/K - Quit (Kwit) The GOLD/K (GOLD/"Kwit") command is used as one method of exiting the file WITHOUT storing the changes made to that file. When GOLD/K is pressed, you will be asked if you want to continue exiting without filing. Answer Y if you really want to quit and return to DCL. Answer N if you want to change/edit the file some more or would like to file the document and store the changes you have made. NOTE: If you have not made any additions/changes to the file or any of the buffers in this edit session, you will not receive the "do you want to continue" prompt, but will be returned directly to DCL. For additional methods of quitting (exiting a document without filing), see GOLD/Q. GOLD/L - Switch to Last Buffer The GOLD/L command is used to switch you to the last buffer you worked in (prior to the buffer you are in now). After pressing the GOLD/L command, you will be taken directly to the buffer you worked in immediately before jumping to this buffer. For additional information on jumping between buffers, see GOLD/J (GOLD/"Jump"). GOLD/N - New Page The GOLD/N (GOLD/"New Page") command is used to place a FORM FEED character in your file. To insert a FORM FEED into your file, place the character on the first character below the last line you want to print on a page and press GOLD/N. This FORM FEED character will cause the printer to advance to the top of the next page before printing any characters after the FORM FEED. For additional methods of inserting FORM FEED characters into your file, see GOLD/P (GOLD/"Page Marker"). GOLD/O - Output Buffer The GOLD/O command is used to copy the contents of a buffer to a file. After pressing the GOLD/O keys, the prompt "Output buffer:" will display at the bottom of your screen. Enter the name of the buffer that contains the information you want to copy to a file (i.e., DCL ). Next, a prompt asking the name of the file you want to copy this buffer to appears at the bottom of your screen ("To filename [FILENAME.EXT]", where "[FILENAME.EXT]" is the name of the file used in the original EVE command). Enter the name of the file to output this buffer to (including disk and directory, if necessary) and press --or-- if the file you want to copy the buffer to is the one indicated in the prompt, just press . GOLD/P - Page Marker The GOLD/P (GOLD/"Page Marker") command is used to place a FORM FEED character in your file. To insert a FORM FEED into your file, place the character on the first character below the last line you want to print on a page and press GOLD/N. This FORM FEED character will cause the printer to advance to the top of the next page before printing any characters after the FORM FEED. For additional methods of inserting FORM FEED characters into your file, see GOLD/N (GOLD/"New Page"). GOLD/Q - Quit The GOLD/Q (GOLD/"Quit") command is used as one method of exiting the file WITHOUT storing the changes made to that file. When GOLD/Q is pressed, you will be asked if you want to continue exiting without filing. For additional methods of quitting (exiting a document without filing), see GOLD/K. GOLD/S - Split/Unsplit Screen The GOLD/S command is used to toggle between displaying one window and displaying split (i.e., two) windows. The first time the GOLD/S command is used, the screen will be divided into two windows. The buffer for both windows at this time will be the same buffer that was indicated prior to issuing the GOLD/S command. The second time the GOLD/S command is used, the screen will go back to just one window. The buffer for this one window will be the buffer in which the cursor was located at the time the GOLD/S command was issued. To change the buffer for the window the cursor is in, see GOLD/J or GOLD/L. To move from one window to the other, see GOLD/X. GOLD/T - Top The GOLD/T (GOLD/"Top Document") command allows you to move to the top of the current buffer you are working in. After the GOLD/T keys are pressed, the system will search for the top of the file and the cursor will then be placed on the first character in that buffer. GOLD/V - View Special Characters The GOLD/V (GOLD/"View") command allows you to view the special or nonprintable characters that you have inserted into your file (using GOLD/A or CTRL/V). These special characters [ASCII(0) - ASCII(8) and ASCII(14) - ASCII(31)] normally display in EVE as a backwards questionmark. To view a special character, place the cursor on the line that contains the special character (e.g., backwards questionmark) and press the GOLD/V keys. The line will then display at the top of the screen in the "TRANSLATE" buffer with the special characters translated between angle brackets ("<>"). For example, a BELL character (placed in the file by pressing CTRL/G when inserting a special character) will display as , and a BACKSPACE character (placed in the file by pressing CTRL/H when inserting a special character) will display as . For further information on inserting special characters, see CTRL/V or GOLD/A. GOLD/W - Toggle Screen Width (80/132) The GOLD/W command is used to toggle between a "Narrow" screen 80 characters in width and a "Wide" screen 132 characters in width. The first time the GOLD/W command is used, the screen will clear briefly and the repaint with the "wide" screen of 132 characters wide. After the screen has been switched to this "wide" form, the point at which the line will be wrapped will be changed to 131 (default point for line wrap is 79). To return to the "narrow" screen (and a line wrap at 79), press the GOLD/W keys a second time. GOLD/X - Xchange Windows (Move Between Windows) The GOLD/X command is used to move between windows after the GOLD/S (split screen) command has been used. After the GOLD/X command has been pressed, the cursor will move to the first character that is displayed in the other window. The next time GOLD/X is used, the cursor will move back to the first window. As is the case with jumping between buffers, the most common reason for using the split window command and moving between the windows is to move text from one buffer (for example, the DCL buffer or the buffer for a file you used GOLD/G to get) to the main buffer to be included in the file you are trying to create/edit. For additional information on jumping between buffers see, GOLD/J. For additional information on using the split window command, see GOLD/S. GOLD/' (GOLD/APOSTROPHE) - Replace Occurrences of Text The GOLD/' (GOLD/"Replc") command is used to search and replace specified text. When GOLD/' is pressed, the prompt "Old String:" will appear at the bottom of the screen. Enter the character string to search for (that you want to replace) and press . The prompt "New String:" will then appear at the bottom of the screen. Enter the information to replace the character string being searched for and press . The first occurrence of the search string that is found will then be highlighted and the following prompt will then appear at the bottom of the screen: "Replace? Type yes, no, all, last, or quit:" Enter "yes " to replace the highlighted text the the "new string" (this is the default...you could also just press the ). Enter "no " to ignore the highlighted text and search for the next occurrence of the search string. Enter "all " to replace all occurrences of the search string with the "new string" (i.e., without prompting you for each occurrence). Enter "last " to replace the highlighted text and then stop searching for any further occurrences of the search string. Enter "quit " to NOT replace the highlighted text and also NOT search for any further occurrences of the search string. NOTE: If the search string is not found in the direction shown by the Direction Indicator (at the bottom of the screen), but it is, however, found in the opposite direction, the following prompt will appear at the bottom of the screen BEFORE the "Replace? Type yes..." prompt appears: "Found in **** direction. Go There?" (where **** is the opposite direction of the current Direction Indicator) To go to the occurrence of the search string found in the opposite direction, answer "Y ." If you do not want to go to the occurrence found in the opposite direction, answer "N ." GOLD/, (GOLD/COMMA) - Search The GOLD/comma (the "Main Keyboard Comma"...GOLD/"Srch") allows you to enter a string of characters to search for. After pressing GOLD/Comma, you will be prompted to enter the desired search string (the prompt will be either "Forward Find:" or "Reverse Find:"). Enter the desired phrase to search for and press . Go There?" (where **** is the opposite direction of the current Direction Indicator) To go to the occurrence of the search string found in the opposite direction, answer "Y ." If you do not want to go to the occurrence found in the opposite direction, answer "N ." To continue searching for the same string of characters, press the see GOLD/Period. For instruction on how to change the direction indicator, see F11 --or-- KP1 and KP0. For additional methods of searching for a specified string of characters, see . GOLD/. (GOLD/PERIOD) - Continue Search The GOLD/PERIOD (the "Main Keyboard Period"...GOLD/"Cont Srch") command is used to find the NEXT occurrence of the search string used in a GOLD/Comma (GOLD/"Srch") command. After pressing GOLD/Period, EVE will continue scanning the file for the specified string of characters in the direction specified by the Direction Indicator. NOTE: If the search string is not found in the direction shown by the Direction Indicator (at the bottom of the screen), but it is, however, found in the opposite direction, the following prompt will appear at the bottom of the screen: "Found in **** direction. Go There?" (where **** is the opposite direction of the current Direction Indicator) To go to the occurrence of the search string found in the opposite direction, answer "Y ." If you do not want to go to the occurrence found in the opposite direction, answer "N ." For instruction on how to change the direction indicator, see F11 --or-- KP1 and KP0. For additional methods of searching for a specified string of characters, see (or for continue search). GOLD/$ - Spawn DCL Process The GOLD/$ command is used to spawn a DCL process while in an EVE session. After GOLD/$ is pressed, a DCL ($) prompt will appear below the EVE screen. You may then perform any DCL command you need to. To return to the EVE editing session (from the spawned DCL process, type "LO " at the DCL prompt. NOTE: The commands (and their results) issued in this spawned DCL process WILL NOT be included in the DCL buffer of your EVE editing session. To accomplish that, see GOLD/D. GOLD/! - DCL Comment The GOLD/! command is used to insert three DCL comment lines in the EVE editing session. After GOLD/! is pressed, three comment lines similar to the following will appear in the buffer you are working in: $!+ $! $!- The cursor will then be placed in the MIDDLE line of the three comment lines (i.e., the line without a "+" or a "-") for your ease in entering comments into DCL command files. GOLD/ - DCL Command Line On/Off The GOLD/ command is used to begin entry of DCL command lines. After the GOLD/ is pressed, the function of the is changed and a message indicating this will appear at the bottom of the screen. From then on, when the is pressed a "$ " will appear at the beginning of the next line. To cancel the DCL command line entry, press GOLD/ a second time (the key will then simply place the cursor at the beginning of the next blank line). GOLD/[ - Enter EVE/TPU Commands The GOLD/[ (GOLD/"Cmnd") command functions the same as the key. This command is made available for terminals that are in VT100 mode (Rainbows, etc.) where there is no key or the key does not work. When GOLD/"Cmnd" is pressed, the prompt "Command:" appears at the bottom of the screen and the cursor is positioned next to this prompt. At this point you can enter any of the EVE commands and press . For additional methods of entering EVE/TPU commands, see . V - OTHER EVE COMMANDS The following commands are all used at the EVE "Command:" prompt. To start the process for entering commands, use the key (or GOLD/"Cmnd"). Listed below are a few of the most commonly used commands that you may enter at the "Command:" prompt. NOTE: To get online help or additional information on these commands, type in the word HELP at the "Command:" prompt. DEFINE KEY The DEFINE KEY command allows you to define a key that will execute an EVE command that you frequently use. For instance, if you are using the SHIFT LEFT and SHIFT RIGHT commands frequently, you can define two keys on the keyboard (that is not being used for another purpose by EVE, preferably) that will execute those commands for you. After pressing the key (or GOLD/"Cmnd"), enter "DEFINE KEY " and the prompt "Eve command:" will then be displayed at the bottom of the screen. Enter the EVE command that you want to set up (i.e., SHIFT LEFT) and press . You will then be prompted to enter the key that you want to be defined (i.e., the key you want to press to execute this command, for example, F17). The key you selected (F17 in the example) will then be defined for the current EVE session. GO TO This command will allow you to move immediately to a previously marked location in the file. This command will, therefore, allow you to move quickly to frequently referenced locations in your file. NOTE: Before you can use this command, you must have "marked" one or more locations in the file using the MARK command. After pressing the key (or GOLD/"Cmnd"), enter "GO TO " and the prompt "Go to:" will appear at the bottom of the screen. Enter the mark name that you have previously set up and press . The cursor will then go directly to the position in the text for that mark name. For further information on setting up mark names, see the MARK command below. HELP The HELP command provides online help for the EVE commands used at the "Command:" prompt. After pressing the key (or GOLD/"Cmnd"), enter "HELP " and a list of available topics (i.e., the commands that are used at the "Command:" prompt). Enter the topic you want assistance on and press . Help for this topic will then be displayed. After this, you can enter another topic name, press a question mark (?) to look at the list of topics again, or press to return to the editing session. For additional methods of help for EVE, see GOLD/H or in the "Using EVE..." section. LEARN The LEARN command allows you to record a sequence of keystrokes that you want to use again. CTRL/R is used to end recording the sequence of keystrokes you are attempting to store. After pressing the key (or GOLD/"Cmnd"), enter "LEARN " and the message "Press keystrokes to be learned. Press CTRL/R to remember these keystrokes" will appear at the bottom of the screen. At this time you should begin entering all the keystrokes you want to store. When you have completed entering the keystrokes to be remembered, press CTRL/R. For further information on the "Remember" command (to store the keystrokes entered with the "Learn" command), see the CTRL/R command in the "Using Eve - Stored Keys, Etc." section. LINE The LINE command allows you to move to a specified line in the buffer you are currently using. After pressing the key (or GOLD/"Cmnd"), enter "LINE " and the prompt "Line number:" will appear at the bottom of the screen. Enter the number of the line you want to go to and press . The cursor will then be placed at the beginning of the specified line. MARK This command tells EVE to remember the current cursor position by a "mark" name. This command is useful if you are editing a large file and want to go back to a particular session; it prevents you from having to search throughout the file. The GO TO command is used to move directly to these "marked" locations. After pressing the key (or GOLD/"Cmnd"), enter "MARK " and the prompt "Mark name:" will appear at the bottom of the screen. Enter the name you want to assign to this location and press . A message will then appear at the bottom of the screen indicating that the "current position is marked as xxxxx." For further information on moving to the marked locations, see the GO TO command below. REPEAT The REPEAT command will let you repeat the next command/character a specified number of times. After pressing the key (or GOLD/"Cmnd"), enter "REPEAT " and the prompt "Number of times to repeat:" will appear at the bottom of the screen. Enter the number of times you want to repeat the command/ character you will be specifying. The message "Will repeat next command n times" then appears at the bottom of the screen (where n stands for the number you just entered). The next key you press will then be repeated n times. SET LEFT MARGIN The SET LEFT MARGIN command allows you to change the default left margin of 1 to whatever margin you feel is appropriate. After pressing the key (or GOLD/"Cmnd"), enter "SET LEFT MARGIN " and the prompt "Set left margin to:" will appear. Enter the number that you want the left margin set to and press . Any new text entered at this time will start at the new left margin. NOTE: Use the GOLD/ command to change text already entered in the file/buffer (i.e., entered before the set left margin command was used). For further information on GOLD/, see the "Using EVE - Stored Keys, Etc." section. SET RIGHT MARGIN The SET RIGHT MARGIN command allows you to change the default right margin of 79 or 131 to whatever margin you feel is appropriate. After pressing the key (or GOLD/"Cmnd"), enter "SET RIGHT MARGIN " and the prompt "Set right margin to:" will appear. Enter the number that you want the right margin set to and press . Any new text entered at this time will wrap at the new right margin. NOTE: Use the GOLD/ command to change text already entered in the file/buffer (i.e., entered before the set right margin command was used). For further information on GOLD/, see the "Using EVE - Stored Keys, Etc." section. SET TABS AT The SET TABS AT command will allow you to change the default tab settings (every eight columns/spaces) to a new specified locations. After pressing the key (or GOLD/"Cmnd"), enter "SET TABS AT " and you will then be prompted to enter the tab stops. Enter the numbers to indicate the locations you want to set tabs at with a space between each location (i.e., 5 15 25 45 65) and press . The tabs will now be changed to the locations you specified. SET TABS EVERY The SET TABS EVERY command will allow you to set new tab stops at equal intervals for the file/buffer you are working in. NOTE: The default tab settings are every eight columns/spaces. After pressing the key (or GOLD/"Cmnd"), enter "SET TABS EVERY " and you will then be prompted to enter the tab interval (i.e., 5) and press . The tabs will now be set to the interval you specified. SET WIDTH The SET WIDTH command allows you to set the width of the lines displayed on your screen. EVE will display lines no longer than the number of characters you enter using this command. NOTE: This is NOT the same as changing the screen mode from 80 to 132!!! To do that, you must use GOLD/W. After pressing the key (or GOLD/"Cmnd"), enter "SET WIDTH " and you will then be prompted to enter the width of the lines that you want to set up. Enter the number for this width (i.e., 70) and press . The buffer display will then change so that NO MORE characters than the number you entered will be displayed on one line. NOTE: Wherever a line takes up more than the width you indicated, you will see a highlighted diamond at the end of the line (similar to a select mark). If you want the lines to wrap within the width you have specified, you will have to use the SET RIGHT MARGIN command (described above). SHIFT LEFT The SHIFT LEFT command shifts or moves the window horizontally to the left a specified number of columns. This will allow you to see characters to the left of the current screen width. This is especially helpful if you have a line length greater than 80 but your terminal cannot (or you don't want it to) switch to 132 mode. After pressing the key (or GOLD/"Cmnd"), enter "SHIFT LEFT " and you will then be prompted to enter the number of columns you want to move to the left. Enter the number to shift (i.e., 10) and press . The window will then shift the specified number of positions to the left (which means you will also lose the ability to see that same number of characters on the right side of the screen). For further information on shifting the window position, see the SHIFT RIGHT command below. SHIFT RIGHT The SHIFT RIGHT command shifts or moves the window horizontally to the right a specified number of columns. This will allow you to see characters to the right of the current screen width. This is especially helpful if you have a line length greater than 80 but your terminal cannot (or you don't want it to) switch to 132 mode. After pressing the key (or GOLD/"Cmnd"), enter "SHIFT RIGHT " and you will then be prompted to enter the number of columns you want to move to the left. Enter the number to shift (i.e., 10) and press . The window will then shift the specified number of positions to the right (which means you will also lose the ability to see that same number of characters on the left side of the screen). For further information on shifting the window position, see the SHIFT LEFT command above. SHOW The SHOW command displays information about the current buffer you are working in. This information includes the name of the input file, the name of the output file, the margin settings, the number of lines, the current direction and mode, and the names of marks associated with the buffer. It also shows whether or not the buffer has been changed since it was last written to a file and the current screen width as well as the current version of EVE (displayed on the status line). After pressing the key (or GOLD/"Cmnd"), enter "SHOW " and the screen will clear with the SHOW buffer then being displayed. An example of the information displayed with this command is shown below: ========================================================= Information about buffer FILENAME.EXT Input file: USERDISK:[USERNAME]FILENAME.EXT;8 Output file: USERDISK:[USERNAME]FILENAME.EXT;8 Modified Left margin set to 1 Insert mode Right margin set to 79 Reverse direction Window width set to 79 36 lines Tab stops set every 8 columns Marks: MARK1 MARK2 _________________________________________________________ SHOW buffer (EVE Version V1.0-000) Press any key to resume editing ========================================================= NOTE: If you have been using more than one buffer during this editing session, you will be asked if you want more information. Press the key if you want to find out this same type of information about other buffers; otherwise, press to resume editing.
