Sending the zero bytes through was necessary with your old routine because
it worked strangely.  Mine works differently, and it will work right only
if you don't send the zeros.  On receive, sending the received CRC and
checking for zero is equivalent to not sending it through, then comparing
received and calculated CRCs.
