If I happen to hear of an IBM version I'll you know. I agree that the EBCDIC to ASCII conversion should make it difficult if not impossible for most protocol converters. The IBM 7171 (which is patterned after the Yale ASCII Terminal System for Series/1) has a "transparent" mode which can be invoked by the host software. This mode basically clears a path through the protocol converter and allows pure ASCII data to be passed through without translation and without cursor addressing etc. stuffed in. Both CMS-Kermit and PCTRANS use this transparency feature for file transfer. I presume that it would be possible for someone to write an XMODEM for IBM which would do the same. Since the 7171 (and Yale) are the only protocol converters that I know to have such a feature, it isn't likely that anyone (except maybe Yale University) will write a version just for them. Since we do also have a VAX Cluster, perhaps you could let me know how XMODEM is distrubuted for that. Again, thanks for the information. The current status of the VAX system is that we have JNET installed and are communicating with the IBM system, but the node name is not yet included in the BITNET node tables. We have just recently sent the node information in so the node should be in next month's distribution of tables. I will let you know when the node is on BITNET. The node name is WSUVMS1 and the user is CANNON. If you get real involved in 7171 issues you may be interested in an interest group (distribution list) for 7171 (and other protocol converter) topics run by John Voigt (SYSBJAV@TCSVM). If you send a note to John he will put you on the distribution list. However, putting your name on this list is somewhat akin to turning on a CB radio --- there is lots of chatter.
