While the vast majority of our users come from the continental US and Canada, there is a small group of irregular callers from distant parts of the RSX universe. I don't really know why I get such a kick out of hearing (reading?) from Hawaii, or Australia, but I do. Jan Belgraver, RSX SIG Chair of DECUS Holland (EUROPE?) is one of these very-long-distance members of the RSX BBS. Although Jan logs in infrequently, this is quite understandable considering what his long distance bills must look like! Jan has been after me for some time to put up a command-line editor task called MCE, which originates in Holland, and has appeared on a couple of US RSX SIG tapes. After my usual procrastination, I finally dug a copy out of the Spring '88 RSX tape and put it up. I shouldn't have waited! Although I'm generally no big fan of CLE's for RSX, this one is very habit-forming. It provides complete VMS V4.x command-line editing, including symbol definition. Unlike most CLE tasks, this one knows how to follow along when you change default UICs. Numerous command line editors have appeared over the last several years. All have suffered from the basic problem of trying to do at the task level what should properly be built into the terminal driver. It is also very good at staying out of the way of the tasks it spawns. MCE is built from very nicely written and commented MACRO-11. On M-PLUS, MCE can be built multi-user, and in either case is not very large. All in all If you pick up MCE and like it, I'm sure the authors would like to hear from you (as would all contributors of DECUS software). MCE is currently maintained in Holland by - .lm +10 .nf J.H. Hamakers, ASEA Brown Boveri b.v. P.O.Box 301 3000 AH Rotterdam, The Netherlands Phone : +31 - 10 - 4078631 .f .lm -10 although there have been several contributors to it's development. You can get the latest version of MCE from the Spring '88 RSX Sig Tape, or you can upload it from the RSX BBS. Find MCE in DE:[256,20] on the BBS. The BBS version is 4.2d, from the S'88 Tape. Also in this directory is a SLP file to produce V4.2e, which includes my PAUSE command. Kermit, including support for 'long packets' is available for file transfers. Contact the RSX BBS at 612/777-7664 (612/SPR-PONG). Most of the time, 2400baud support is available; 1200baud and 300baud are always there. New users can obtain an account by logging in as user ACCOUNT, password REQUEST. You'll need to give your address and DECUS Membership number.
