St. Cloud State University Academic Computer Services Grader written by Steve Jennen 1) Make new class file Selecting this option will allow you to create a new class file. Before any students or scores are entered, a class file must be created. You will be asked what the class name, section, number and instructor's name are. You may also choose to weigh your scores here and enter the class curve. When all that is done, you may also enter the student's names and SSNs. 2) Load class file When selected, this option will show on the screen a list of class files in the current directory. You may select a file to load by typing in its number. % 3) Add new students If students were not entered when creating the new class file or you didn't finish entering students, then select this option. You may also select this to add a latecomer to the class file. 4) Add new scores When you are ready to enter scores, select this option. You may enter new scores for a test, quiz or assignment or continue entering scores for an older item if you didn't finish with it. 5) List class data Selecting this option will present you with another menu. From there, you may quickly view on the screen the information that is contained in the currently loaded class file. Use Main Menu option 6 to view student's scores and to generate reports. % 6) Generate reports All statistical reports, whether for the entire class or for an individual student are created from this sub-menu. You may view reports on the screen or print them out. 7) Other options Selecting this brings up another menu to the screen. All options for editing and deleting information are in this section. Options to export and import class files to other systems (such as PC->VAX or VAX->PC) can be found in this sub-menu as well. 0) Quit When finished for the session, select this option. You will be asked to type a name to save the class file under. If the class file you were using is not a new class file, you will be shown the name of the file and can simply press return to save it under the same name. NOTE: DO NOT use a period (.) in the file name unless it's part of the extension .GRD ! List Class Data 1) Class Quickly view the class information on the screen. Displayed will be class name, section, number, instructor's name, method of weighing scores (if any) and the curve. 2) Students View the student's names and SSNs on the screen. As much as can be fit on a screen will be shown. When the screen is full, simply press return to view the rest. 3) Tests/Assignments View the names of all tests, quizzes and assignments on the screen and their total points possible. If the item is weighted or grouped, the weight or the group name will also be displayed. ! Generate Reports 1) Class stats Generate a report containing all students and scores for all tests, quizzes and assignments and final grades and a frequency distribution table of grades. You will have the option of viewing the report on screen or having it sent to the printer. Also, you may choose to hide the student's names and/or sort the students by SSN. 2) Stats for Test/Assignment Generate a report on one test, quiz or assignment. This will simply show all the student's scores for a single item as well as the class statistical information for the item. Here too, you may choose to hide the student's names and just print the SSN. % 3) Final Grades Generate a report containing all students and their totals for the class as well as their final grade. Note that this will not show individual scores for all the student's tests, quizzes or assignemnts. The report will only show the totals and a frequency distribution table of final grades. 4) Individual student stats Selecting this will allow you to generate a report for one student. Contained in the report will be all the student's scores and their total. This report may be viewed on the screen or sent to the printer. 5) Adjust weights If the scores are being weighted, selecting this option will allow you to adjust the weights for one or all of the tests, quizzes or assignments. The total cumulative weight of all items is also displayed. It is up to you to insure that the total cumulative weight is 100 (percent). If the total is less than 100, that's OK, the SCSU Grader will properly compute current grade relative to how much 'weight' there is. 6) Adjust Group weights If the scores are being grouped and weighted, you may adjust the group weights from this option. As above, the total cumulative weight is shown and it is up to you to insure it equals 100 (percent). ! Other Options 1) Edit class information Select this option if you would like to change the name, section, number, instructor's name or the curve for the class. 2) Export class file If you would like to make a copy of your class file that may be imported on another system, select this option. You will simply be asked for a filename and it is suggested that you use the extension of .TXT for the filename. For example, if the class is History 101, try using the name HIST101.TXT Limit the filename to 8 characters (not including the extension), as that is the maximum filename length on pc/ms-dos systems. 3) Import class file If you have a file exported from another system, use this option to load it in. You will have to type the full name of the file. % 4) Import Student flat file Select this option only if you have a list of student's names and SSNs in a text file that you would like to load in instead of typing them in. 5) Edit student information This option will allow you to change a student's name and/or the SSN. 6) Delete student Remove a student from the class. 7) Add Extra Credit You may add extra credit points to a student's data if you wish. Please note, however, that the extra credit is not in any way computed into the grade through this program. It is up to you, the instructor, to change the student's grade appropriately. % 8) Edit scores This option will allow you to edit scores for a student. If you made a mistake in entering a score, or need to change a score for one student, you may do so here. 9) Delete scores If you wish to delete a test, quiz or assignment completely, then select this option. If you choose to delete an item, it as well as all the student's scores for that test will be removed permanently from the class file. !
