I use (and recommend to my clients) the Andromeda SCDC series of SCSI controllers. It emulates a standard DEC "DU" device for disks and an "MU" device for tapes. All configuration can be done either from the system console (including VAXstations) or via a terminal connected to the controller. However, the feature I like best is the company's policy of free microcode updates 24 hours a day via modem. They have models for both "skunk box" (BA2xx) and the older Q-Bus enclosures. While they normally sell in quantity to OEMs and distributers, they will cheerfully sell single units to individuals.
