Follow anti-static procedures and/or contact your hardware service organization *before* performing the following. I *think* the following is correct, *but* there *may* be errors -- please don't call me (or Digital) if you smoke your system, scrozzle your drive, or somehow damage your body. The RQDX3 -- the only RQDX controller that can run an RD54 -- does indeed have a jumper that must be moved to configure it for the RD54. It's labeled W23. If it's a rev C controller, jumper pins J1 and J2. If it's rev D, jumper pins 1 and 2, and you may also need to jumper pins 3 and 4. The RD54 drive select (which comes into play in the BA23 enclosure, and doesn't really come into play in a BA123) should be on pins 2 and 3 (if the pins are labeled DS1234) or on pins 3 to c (if the pins are labeled 1C23C4). This is drive select 2, unit 0. If the drive is labeled as a Maxtor XT2190, the RQDX3 must be rev D. If using a BA23, you should try to use the six-hole front panel as it reduces the changes of running into a floating drive select or write protect (WP) should you choose the wrong drive select (DS) on the RD54. (Stay away from DS0 and DS1, and if you have a four-button front panel, stay away from DS3.) DS0: WP 2, Fixed disk unit 0 DS1: WP 3, Fixed disk unit 1 DS2: WP 0, Fixed disk unit 0 DS3: WP 1, Fixed disk unit 1 If the controller ROMs are different versions or if the drive is out of a 2000-series box, you may end up having to reformat the RD54 drive to access it -- and this would (obviously) defeat the whole project. ------------------------------ Opinionative ------------------------------- Stephen Hoffman, NREMT-I, N1THN hoffman@xdelta.enet.dec.com OpenVMS Engineering, Digital Equipment Corporation, Nashua NH "Novus Ordo Seclorum"
