Please send changes, corrections, comments, and most especially additions to . Sites that only archive one or more specific software packages are not listed here. The sites listed in this posting are: Site: cerritos.edu Anonymous FTP, Mail Server (via internet only) Site: acfcluster.nyu.edu Anonymous FTP, VMSSERV@NYUACF (bitnet interactive message only) Site: nrlvax.nrl.navy.mil Mail Server Site: dmc.com Anonymous uucp, mail server, anonymous FTP Site: ftp.sterling.com Anonymous FTP For more info, see the detailed listings below. ------------------------------ Site: cerritos.edu Contact: Bruce Tanner Access: Anonymous FTP, Mailserver (via internet only) "In order to automate the archival process, the news batching command file looks for a Subject: line in the form of ' nn of mm' or ' nn/mm' and creates the files []PARTnn.SHARE (let me know about any other formats). Replace by a descriptive name for your software package, which should be a legal VMS file name (name portion only, no periods). The header 'Archive-name: package/file' creates the file [PACKAGE]FILE.SHARE. It would be helpful if you could use Archive-name: headers (preferred), or the given subject line format. Other postings must be classified and stored in the archive area by hand, which takes time and might not happen immediately. The files are available for anonymous FTP from Black.Cerritos.EDU [130.150.200.21] and White.Cerritos.EDU [130.150.200.22]. These are VAX 6330/6320 cluster members running VMS V5.3-1 and Multinet V2.1. The files are in [ANONYMOUS.MAILSERV.PACKAGE] and when I have the time and software, I'll try to build the package and put it in [ANONYMOUS.VMSNET]PACKAGE.BCK_Z. Mailserver access is via MAILSERV@Cerritos.EDU. Place the mailserv commands in the body of the message, one line per command. You can start with 'help' and 'index'; 'send [package]partnn.share' will get you one of the parts. Alas, no wild cards are supported. Mailserv UUCP access is not supported. However, if you can pass mail through an Internet gateway such that I get the request via SMTP, you get your request handled OK." ------------------------------ Site: acfcluster.nyu.edu Contact: Stephen Tihor Access: Anonymous FTP, VMSSERV@NYUACF (bitnet interactive message only) "I am archiving most of the sources from VMSNET into the [ANONYMOUS.VMS] area on ACFcluster.NYU.EDU. These files can also be picked up via VMSSERV over bitnet by INTERACTIVE message only." Foteos Macrides sends this helpful hint for Bitnet sites who do not receive vmsnet.sources: In case anyone in our situation (VAX-VMS, BITNET-only, Jnet software) should ask you a similar question, here's what turned out to be the easiest and fastest way to keep current with postings to VMSnet.sources (short of carrying it): Use the archive at acfcluster.nyu.edu via BITNET/Jnet interactive messaging to VMSSERV@NYUACF. Periodically issue the command $ SEND VMSSERV@NYUACF INDEX which will get you a list of what's archived (with dates). Do a $ DIFF versus the previous list to see what's new. Follow the instructions at the top of the list for getting the software packages (they can be gotten with the Jnet VMSDUMP protocol, which is essentially corruption-proof). ------------------------------ Site: nrlvax.nrl.navy.mil Contact: Joe Koffley Access: Mail server NRL_ARCHIVE -------------------- This site is intended almost exclusively to server VAX/VMS systems. Nearly all of the packages in this archive are in VMS_SHARE format with the exception of a few UNIX packages I am also serving up. I have tried to mirror as much of the VMSNET archives ar acfcluster and cerritos as I could. If you feel that I should have a certain package that was posted to VMSNET, send a mail message to the address koffley@nrlvax.nrl.navy.mil. Currently there are no restrictions as to what time of day fileserver requests will be handled unless the package pieces you requested are over roughly 100 VAX blocks (51K) for any individual piece. There is a bit of duplication among certain packages like CSWING and the VMS tools dealing with LZW and UNIX-VMS conversions. This was intentional and the reason is that different sites had different versions of code to do the same thing. Some work better than others. Some of the packages in this archive are culled from alt.sources and from comp.sources.misc. Nearly all of these are in UNIX shar format and you will need to get the VMS UNSHAR program from this archive to unpack them. You will find that the majority of the UNIX shar'ed packages are targeted for UNIX machines (are you surprised ?). However, most can be ported to VMS with a little (in some cases , a LOT) of work. THERE ARE NO GUARANTEES ON ANY OF THIS SOFTWARE. CAVEAT RECEPTOR ! ! DO NOT ASK ME FOR DIRECTIONS ON HOW TO RUN ANY OF THESE. I HAVE RUN NEARLY ALL OF THEM BUT I DON'T HAVE THE TIME TO TELL YOU HOW TO RUN THE CODE. I WILL TRY TO HELP YOU UNPACK IT ON YOUR VMS SYSTEM. This fileserver has over 250 packages available. Due to the time it has taken simply to populate this archive, the vast majority are not documented unless you send for the package itself . It is strongly recommended that you send the command LIST ALL to get a list of all of the packages in a concise tabular format. DO NOT simply send a LIST command as you will regret it greatly. See the commands summary below. Part of the summary sent by using the LIST ALL command will tell you that there is no description file for a given package. This generally can be taken as meaning that the package either doesn't exist or exists but I haven't included a description file yet. The LIST ALL command will send you a chart containing the package names and the packing formats you will most likely need to reconstruct the source and/or executable code. In some cases you will see that none of the formats (LZW for VMS, UUencode, UNIX TAR, etc) has been checked off on the chart. This can mean either that I have not updated the chart for that package or it is in a format I didin't include in the chart (e.g. LHARC or MFTU). In most cases, I have annotated the description file for these odd cases. The message that will be sent to you from the LIST ALL command is presently 273 blocks (approx 140K) in length. It is transmitted as one messsage. If the table entry for a given packages has the UNDEFINED column marked as as "Y" then the package has not been properly "registered" with the database program I've written to track the packages. In those cases, you can take your chances and send for the package description first. As of 12-91 I have FTP the majority of the NETLIB math libraries from AT&T. There are a few packages that are still not on-line due to size. They'll most likely never be available via this server. The packages that fall into this category are (as of 1-92) : KHOROS, COOKIE (look for it at a later date). FILESERV is a file distribution service that uses electronic mail facilities to deliver files. To communicate with FILESERV, send an E-mail message to: nrl_archive@nrlvax.nrl.navy.mil Commands are sent in the body of the message you send to FILESERV. Several commands may be sent at one time; just put one command per line. FILESERV Commands: SENDME package Sends all parts of the specified package. SENDME package.n Sends part 'n' of the specified package. LIST [pattern] Gives brief description of all packages matching "pattern". If pattern is omitted, a description of ALL packages is sent. ^^^ LIST ALL will send a directory of the packages available from this server. HELP Sends HELP file. Commands may be abbreviated. DIRECTORY is a synonym for LIST. For each request you make, a transaction log is returned to you indicating the status of the request. The status report will indicate whether the request was successfully completed, and when the file was or will be sent. Large files are sent only during off-peak hours. Problems, questions, and comments about FILESERV service on this system should be directed to koffley@nrlvax.nrl.navy.mil. ------------------------------ Site: dmc.com Contact: Dick Munroe Access: Anonymous uucp, mail server, anonymous FTP DMConnection has enabled anonymous FTP, anonymous UUCP, and mail base archive server access to our archives which include VMSNET.SOURCES, some of the GNU stuff, COMP.SOURCES.*, a selection of COMP.BINARIES.*, and the latest L&T CDROMs. For details on the contents of the file servers send a message containing: SEND INDEX to fileserv@dmc.com.
