Hi... Spotted your message in vmsnet.pdp-11 on Rollin.

As a former RSTS implementer, I can add a bit.  I didn't see much
else on this discussion, and I'm not on the mailing list itself
(found the note via AltaVista).  You might pass this note on if
it contains something that wasn't already mentioned.

First of all (I did see this elsewhere) Rollin was used by RSTS
prior to V5B.  It could backup RF11, RK05, or RP02/03 to either
disk or tape (including DECtape, fun...).  As far as I remember,
tbose tape backups were bootable, so the magtape backup should
look as follows:
1. DOS format tape file label (14 bytes)
2. Image of Rollin all in one tape block
3. Backup data, raw disk dump of the whole disk

Rollin didn't know anything about file structure, so if you take
a straigth restore of the dump blocks  you end up with a disk
image file.  Then you can manipulate that with whatever tools 
you like.

If the backup is of a RSTS disk, you can use Rstsflx, which I wrote
(available at update.uu.se in /pub/pdp11/rsts/utils).
