(I've built the OS/2 and DGJPP binaries; the WinNT binary is still out of date, but someone offered recently to build it). vile is a text editor which is extremely compatible with vi in terms of "finger feel". in addition, it has extended capabilities in many areas, notably multi-file/multi-window editing and viewing, key rebinding, mouse and real X window system support. vile builds/runs on UNIX and equivalent (termcap/terminfo, X Window), VAX/VMS, OS/2 (both native and EMX), MS-DOS (DJGPP), WinNT (console and GUI, with Visual C/C++ 4.1). Highlights since 7.2: + lots of bug fixes, of course + beginnings of perl interface + macro-names are now recognized as commands, so the prefix execute-procedure is not needed + implement tags-completion + reimplement tagignorecase mode + rewrote internals of command/message line to make it a one-line minibuffer + change $shell to use $COMSPEC on OS/2, MS-DOS, etc. + add fallback for tparam/tparm in tcap.c (for EMX, but usable for genuine termcap systems such as SunOS 4.x), to support color. + a more modular/extensible configure script + new configure options: --with-Xaw3d --with-neXtaw --with-Xaw-scrollbars --with-drag-extension --disable-extensions --disable-shell --with-dmalloc + implement flash and mouse in OS/2 driver. + new ports (WinNT GUI, OS/2's EMX environment) -- Thomas E.
